Hair Lesson: Hot Comb Alopecia

Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA), otherwise known as hot comb alopecia, effects many women who have thick hair and use either a) the hot comb or b) relaxers. It is a result of hot petroleum from a melting hot comb which burns the scalp. Basically the hair follicle becomes damaged and starts to turn into scarred tissue. Turns out, the hair loss I've reported in other blog posts is a result of this form of alopecia! Good news is 1) I couldn't have caused this because 1a) I have no clue how to use a hot comb! and 1b) I haven't had a relaxer in 4 years! and 2) my itching and hair loss caused by scalp inflammation is still in its beginning stages. No scarred tissue as of yet. For the next 6 weeks I'll be using dermatologist-prescribed shampoo (1x a week) and grease (every day).

So for ladies who may be experiencing the same hair loss, it's not a matter of using incorrect products, styling your hair incorrectly, improper diet, or even stress. It may the result of what a stylist has done and it's just taken a while for you to notice it.

TGFD (thank God for dermatologists!)

  1. I had hair loss with my last relaxer. It's the reason why I went natural and I'm still trying to get the bald spot to fill in. Good luck on you journey.
